Meet the documentary maker

My name is Sheila Conlin and I have been working in television news for more than 30 years. For the past 17 years, working as a producer for NBC News in Washington, DC.

I started out in one of those newsrooms where journalists "did it all." Reporters also shot film or video and edited it for air - as well anchored live radio newscasts.

In many ways, this venture into the world of documentary making is like returning to those roots. Most of the pictures and sound you will see and hear in this documentary is material I gathered with my own camera. I am fortunate enough to be able to add other professionals to my team to get expert help with editing the videotape and editing the copy before you see the story.

I have been covering the initial costs myself. But will soon have to turn to a crowdsourcing campaign to cover the costs of producing this documentary short so it can be entered in film festivals beginning in the summer of 2014.

You may ask how I came to choose this topic. It's because of a young lady I've watched grow up before my eyes - my neighbor Sasha Todd. Her mother, Barbara, and I are very good friends. And I've heard the anguish of a parent watching her child struggle and only able to help in limited ways. Barbara encouraged me to see how this amazing brace maker custom fits a device for each patient. It's a fabulously interesting process that will capture your imagination.

But once you start hearing details of what these families know - you learn this is a story that needs to be heard by a larger audience. I hope this documentary can get those discussions going.
